Alcohol and Cancer Risk Fact Sheet NCI
Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because of something you have read on this website. Loose use of the terms “moderate” and “a drink” has fueled some of the ongoing debate about alcohol’s impact on health. Throughout the 10,000 or so years that humans have been drinking fermented beverages, they’ve also been arguing about their merits and demerits. The debate still simmers today, with a lively back-and-forth over whether alcohol is good for you or bad for you.
Risks of moderate alcohol use
[1] Heavy drinking can damage the liver and heart, harm an unborn child, increase the chances of developing breast and some other cancers, contribute to depression and violence, and interfere with relationships. “When studies excluded former drinkers and people with underlying health problems, they didn’t show the same alcohol-related cardiovascular benefits,” says Dr. Manson. The Dietary Guidelines also list several categories of people who should not drink at all. Finally, the Dietary Guidelines provide specific recommendations for recovering alcoholics and for people who have family members with alcohol problems.
Lowering your health risks from alcohol
- In the United States, people younger than age 21 are not legally able to drink alcohol.
- But there was a significantly increased risk of mortality among those who had a few drinks per day or more.
- Paradoxically, however, beginning about 50 years ago, studies began to suggest that moderate drinking might actually be good for the heart.
- By Buddy TBuddy T is a writer and founding member of the Online Al-Anon Outreach Committee with decades of experience writing about alcoholism.

Neither Schaffner nor Rahman could explain why light drinkers have a lower risk of all-cause mortality than nondrinkers. But they agreed that alcohol is a major public health challenge, not only in the U.S. but around the world. There are 140,000 alcohol-related deaths in this country each year, Rahman said, and there were 2.8 million deaths globally in 2016, according to the Lancet paper. Of 30 things linked to diseases of your heart and blood vessels, it said, 90% are found more often among nondrinkers, including body weight.
Moderate Drinking Definition
The doctors and nurses administering the treatment will be able to give specific advice about whether it is safe to consume alcohol while undergoing specific cancer treatments. The plant secondary compound resveratrol, found in grapes used to make red wine and some other plants, has been investigated for many possible health effects, including cancer prevention. However, researchers have found no association between moderate consumption of red wine and the risk of developing prostate cancer (32) or colorectal cancer (33). There is a strong scientific consensus that alcohol drinking can cause several types of cancer (1, 2). In its Report on Carcinogens, the National Toxicology Program of the US Department of Health and Human Services lists consumption of alcoholic beverages as a known human carcinogen.
For example, treatment providers base various treatment decisions on the drinking-behavior information provided by patients. Consequently, inaccurate information could result in suboptimal treatment. The relevance of accurate self-reports of alcohol consumption in general population studies, however, is a more complex issue. For other purposes, such as establishing threshold levels or risk levels for alcohol-related health consequences, however, such an approach may not be sufficient.
The current study is the first to indicate that light to moderate alcohol consumption has longer-term neurobiological effects in dampening activity in the amygdala, which may have a significant downstream impact on the cardiovascular system. Several studies have been done in an attempt to answer the question, what is moderate drinking? Well, in the scientific community, what is considered moderate drinking translates to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. There is also another perspective in which, moderate drinking is defined as limiting the speed at which one drinks so that the blood alcohol concentration is maintained below 0.55.
Alcohol Use
- Alcohol also increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, which is more dangerous in women than in men.
- But studies have shown that the health benefits of alcohol are generally similar among wine, beer and spirits.
- “I think there are certain types of alcohol that people might be more likely to consume in excess, which is particularly deleterious,” says Dr. Manson.
- Studies have shown that females begin having alcohol-related problems at lower levels of alcohol consumption than males.
